In 2015, refugees flooded onto the island of Lesvos from Turkey (5k distance between to two countries). We were fortunate enough to work side by side with Euro-relief outside one of the biggest refugee camps on the island in Moria. We served in a cement building half a kilometer outside the camp, and pioneered a "Morning Tea Time"; we invited people to come and have a free cup of tea, work on a puzzle, exercise their artistic abilities, and have meaningful conversations.
We also had the opportunity to roll "clothing burritos"; they consisted of a shirt, pair of pants, light sweater, underwear, and a pair of socks. Once an asylum seeker arrives onto the island they are taken directly to Moria Camp where they can become registered, and apply for citizenship etc. (This process can take up to 3-5 years to get an interview). Once the asylum seekers are registered, they are given a clothing burrito.
I also had the opportunity to teach my local church in Greece about simple active listening and attending skills.
